Today Renaissance Academy honored National Gun Violence Awareness Day. This is a day to  acknowledge victims of gun violence and a call to action to end gun violence tragedies.  Renaissance Sociology teacher and Minority Student Union advisor Jami Lynch has taken the lead on having this day commemorated school wide.

“Today we wear orange to acknowledge the many lives that have been lost to gun violence as of late and in the past as well.  Today I wear orange with a heavy heart for all my fellow teachers, mothers, and  for all of my students who are impacted directly and indirectly by gun violence.  Today I encourage the RA community to wear orange to acknowledge the lives of others and to hopefully bring attention to an issue that does not need to divide us,  but unite us with love and much needed action.  Today I hope that everyone will work in whatever way they can to create change for our future so that we don't need days like today.”

Renaissance is playing a part in the narrative by giving students and staff the option to wear an orange shirt to show their support to end gun violence and creating a space to openly discuss the effects gun violence has on school communities. Renaissance also took this day to remember those who lost their lives in the Uvalde Elementary and Tops Friendly Market mass shootings.
