High School Choir Syllabus

Welcome to Chorus!

High School Choir General Objectives:

This course is designed to help students achieve greater vocal independence, confidence, inner hearing, and quality tonal production.  Students will study a variety of musical styles and work as an ensemble to perform and share music with friends, family, and the community.  Students will memorize their music and follow conductor cues.  Through group exercises, individual practice, demonstrations, and warm-ups students will become more comfortable in their vocal range, focus on proper breathing, and blending pitch.  Each student experiences a unique and positive atmosphere in which they learn to be a better performer.

Daily Expectations

  • Students are expected to arrive on time with a pencil and music. Be prepared to sing!
  • Attitude is EVERYTHING! Each positive attitude helps create the best class for everyone!
  • Students will be in compliance with the Dress Code. No hats, jackets, or non-school approved sweatshirts or sweaters will be brought to class at anytime.
  • I do not give written homework, but I expect students to take their music home and practice.
  • Absolutely no food, gum, or candy during chorus. Water is allowed during class.
  • Students are responsible for their music.  Each student will have a number written on each piece that correlates to a storage shelf in the back of the classroom.
  • Begin your Do Now immediately.  No talking during rehearsal.  It wastes the precious few minutes that we have.
  • If you miss class for any reason you are responsible to find out any missed rehearsal information.

Requirements
Choir is a performance based class.  Students are REQUIRED to attend 2 after school concerts per year (one winter and one spring concert).  If a student cannot attend a concert, contact must be made with the teacher prior to the concert date if possible.  Only emergency situations will be excused.  Students who are excused from the concert will need to complete a written assignment in lieu of their performance grade for credit.  If a student does not attend the evening concert and does not provide a legitimate excuse, the student will receive a 0 for the missed performance
