July 30, 2021 at 4:03 PM EDT - RA Weekly News

Summer Greetings!
Wow! I find myself in a bit of shock as a look at the calendar and see that July’s end is upon us. Yet, the weeks of summer have truly flown by, and as our community continues to wrestle with the stress and trauma brought on by the past year, we push forward with plans and positivity.

There has been no change to our intended opening of school. We are on track to open for entirely on-site teaching on August 18, 2021. The currently approved plans can be found on our website and will be updated as needed or directed. Additionally, you can review approved/submitted plans which are made available to the public. School Reopening Page.

As we have seen in the past week’s guidance from various authorities, in regard to mitigation continues to change. We are purposefully not making changes to our approved Health and Safety plans at this time, as we do not have students on site. Adjustments will likely be needed to the Health and Safety Plan content before the first day of school. Please note below that a Voting Meeting has been added to the school calendar for this purpose. Your input is welcome and this will be a public meeting. You may send comments prior to the meeting to [email protected]

To make the most informed decisions, with all available information, our trustees have requested a voluntary disclosure of vaccination status for those who are eligible. This information is collected anonymously and there is no required expectation to participate in this data collection. However, you may participate if you wish. A link to this survey will be sent to families of students in the approved legal age range of 12+ years old.

All the best for a safe and restful remainder of your summer,
Dr. Guarino Buli

New Administration Announcements:

In alignment with Renaissance’s continued growth and Strategic Planning, our trustees have provided the authorization and resources for realignment in our staffing. The first steps in making this transition happen have been the hiring of two new administrators who will lead our Elementary and Middle Schools. The new structures will be rolled out to families and students with adjustments and clarifications in the coming weeks and months, as we continue to grow.

The current task at hand is to welcome and introduce our new administrative team! Please see the welcome messages below and join the Board of Trustees and myself in welcoming them to their new roles at our school.

Elementary Principal, Kendra Gruber

Dear Renaissance Academy Families,
My name is Kendra Gruber and I am so excited to introduce myself as the new Elementary School (K-4) Principal at Renaissance Academy. I am honored to have been selected to join this highly esteemed institution, which is known far and wide for its dedication to educational excellence. Over the past eight years, I have worked as a teacher and administrator in alternative education in the Philadelphia School District. I have had the opportunity to serve a large array of students from various backgrounds. Throughout my career, my central mission and vision have been to provide students with a high-quality educational experience that prepares them for secondary and post-secondary success. I believe that through the united commitment to growth, by the students, school staff, families, and community members, every child can reach their full potential. As such, I am eager to officially welcome you to the 2021-2022 school year and I look forward to a successful school year.

Sincerely,
Kendra Gruber

Middle School Principal, Heather Rinker

Dear Renaissance Academy Middle School (5-8) Families:
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! We are thrilled to welcome you and your children back to our school campus for in-person learning. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as your new Middle School Principal (5-8) at Renaissance Academy. My name is Heather Rinker, and this year marks the beginning of my 15th year here at Renaissance. My first 11 years were spent teaching 7th-12th grade, physical education classes. I was also a part of the middle leadership team for five years as the Upper School Fine Arts’ Lead Teacher. In this role, I was able to see the positive influence and impact I could have in our school while being a part of the leadership team. I have worked over the years on our school’s strategic planning, growth, and accreditation processes which led me to help our school develop the role of an Instructional Coach. For the past three years, I have served as our school’s K-12 Instructional Coach. Coaching is a passion of mine, which is why I am involved in our athletic program, training many of our sports teams. I also am an active member of our Equity and Equality and our Strategic Planning Board Committees. While working on these committees, I was able to see that my own values of creating a safe and inclusive school culture, setting high expectations, and developing a strong rapport with all community members, align with Renaissance’s mission and vision.

I am excited to take on this next chapter in my career as well as see Renaissance grow as a school. It will be a pleasure working with such great families and students to foster new traditions, create a positive climate for learning, and develop a new identity for our 5th-8th grade middle school students!

See you soon! Go, Knights!
Ms. Heather Rinker

High School Principal, Michelle Boyd

Renaissance Academy High School Families,
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! My name is Michelle Boyd, and I am the High School Principal. As many of you know, I have been a member of the Renaissance Academy staff for quite some time. This year marks the start of my 19th year with RA and I could not be more proud of the progress and growth our school has made throughout my time here!

While I will miss working with my middle school team and students, I am confident that they are in good hands. I am eager to begin focusing my work more specifically on academic programming, college/career readiness, and unique experiences for our high school! I am looking forward to a great year working with outstanding educators, students, and families!

Ms. Michelle Boyd

From the School Counseling Team:

Transitioning Back to School Night

Please join us for a parent night to help prepare for this coming school year!

It’s hard to believe that a new school year is near! There is always a range of emotions when it comes to change and transitions. We know that this upcoming school year may bring some heightened feelings of anxiety for some, as many of our students have not been in-person learning since March 2020. It’s not just the students that may be starting to stress about the upcoming school year. This is a change for all the adults and families involved. Please remember that we are all still in this together!

That is why the Renaissance Academy Counseling/Support Team is excited and grateful to have Martha Stringer, who is a family support partner with Parent and Family Alliance, join us for a virtual parent presentation on August 11th from 6:30-7:30. Martha will be presenting for approximately 30 minutes and will allow another 30 minutes for discussion time.

The presentation will focus on preparing/helping your child transition back to in person learning while focusing on the anxiety that they may experience.

Summer Greetings!

I hope this message finds you well and able to enjoy the sunny, mild weather we have been experiencing.

As we enter the summer months, I encourage all of our families and staff to take some time to unwind and enjoy the slower and hopefully less stressful days. Everyone in our community deserves some time ‘off,’ and I, too, have committed to taking my advice in scheduling some family time in the months ahead!

We also use this time to plan and prepare for the coming school year. Data is updated and rolled forward, schedules are built, and securing staff for the new school year is underway. I wish to express my appreciation for the various committees who are hard at work on this aspect of planning during this time of year.

Per our last Board of Trustees meeting, we are on track to open for entirely on-site teaching in August. The currently approved plans can be found on our Website and will be updated as needed or directed. Additionally, you can review approved/submitted plans which are made available to the public. Covid-19 Information Page. Weekly communications such as this will continue in July if there is new information to share; however, current information can be found on our website.

All the best for a safe and restful summer,
Dr. Guarino Buli

Friday, May 28, 2021 at 12:54 PM EDT - Confirmed Positive COVID-19 Case

Good Afternoon,

We have just received notice of a confirmed positive COVID-19 case on Campus. The last time on campus with exposure to RA Staff or Students was Thursday, May 20, 2021.

We will not report cases of staff or students if they are remaining in remote learning and have had no contact with our campus but we will continue to report cases of persons who were or were expected to be on campus. We will continue to track all cases for necessary quarantine and mitigation.

It is not believed that there are any ‘Close Contacts’ however if that changes notice will be given. Anyone identified as a Close Contact (per the CDC definition) will be made aware directly. We will continue the process of contact tracing to determine if anyone else may be a close contact. If your student is considered a close contact, you will be made aware and they will be directed to quarantine,

If your child was on campus or may have been exposed to COVID-19, It is recommended that you observe them over the next few days for any of the common symptoms of COVID-19. People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Please visit the CCHD website for more information and contact your medical provider if you have concerns.

The confirmed positive cases will be reported accordingly to the Chester County Department of Health and sanitation guidelines will be followed by our staff. If you would like more information about our COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan or Sanitation protocol those documents can be found on our School Reopening Plan Page.

The staff and faculty at RA are taking every precaution in the interest of staff and students' safety, as informed by the Chester County Health Department and the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. If you have further questions about the safety and precautions that we are taking please contact me.

Thank you for your support in our continued efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Thank you and your child for wearing a mask, washing your hands frequently, social distancing, and staying home when you do not feel well.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Be well,
Dr. Gina Guarino Buli

One to One Communications - Message for current K-11:

By now, all students in our RA community have received a Chromebook device as the COV19 pandemic has forced us into a hybrid learning environment. As we transition into the new school year, there are several updates that need to be communicated as the end-of-year plans have changed to meet the uncertainty of the times.

Each student will be required to keep their Chromebook set up over the Summer vacation.

Parents will need to register their students' Chromebook setup in our One to One Insurance program in order to have all repairs covered over the Summer and throughout the new 2021/2022 school year (registration instructions attached). The due date for registration is June 4th

All existing damages to student Chromebooks (i.e., missing keys, cracked monitors, etc.) will need to be reported as soon as possible through a help desk ticket (instructions for submitting a help desk ticket attached) and the student must be registered under the One to One program in order to have repairs performed before the new school year begins.

When will my student receive a new device?

All new device deployments will be handled at the beginning of the new school year. If your student will be rising to 1st, 5th, or 9th grade, they will receive a new Chromebook.

How will new device deployments work?

The students' old devices will be swapped out with their new devices within the first month of the new school year. They will keep this device setup until one of the following happens:

  • They reach any one of the grades required to receive an upgrade (1st, 5th, and 9th grades).
  • They transfer, withdraw or graduate from Renaissance Academy.

Note: Please note that if your student's Chromebook is damaged while in their care, and you have not registered under our One to One insurance program, you will be held responsible for any costs required for repair. In some cases, this may be very costly so we highly recommend that each parent takes advantage of this program by registering before the start of the next school year. If you are new to RA as of the 2021/2022 school year, please complete the parent orientation before attempting to register. Thank you for your time, and please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Having Trouble?

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to open a ticket with our help desk and someone will reach out to you promptly.

Opening a Help Desk Ticket:

Send an email message to the following email address with a description of your problem: [email protected]

Congratulations, Varsity Softball!

Congratulations to our Varsity Softball team. This is our first year in our new league (Bicentennial Athletic League) as well as PIAA. In their first season, the softball team won their Division Championship in the league and finished the regular season as the #2 team in District One.

They have qualified for District playoffs which begin next Tuesday, May 25th. Since we are the higher seed, we will host the game at 3:45 pm at Friendship Field on Tuesday. Please come out to support the team if you can. If they win on Tuesday, they will move onto the District One Championship Game on Thursday.
Congrats again, and good luck next week!

Kevin Zvorsky, CAA, Director of Athletics

Connections through Art - Thank you!

Thank you, all, for your support of the Connections through Art Auction. Ethan Duong was able to meet his goal and sent a $1000 donation to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. This money will be used to support activities for the children who have been genuinely affected by the isolation caused by the pandemic restrictions. To all the artists, promoters, and auction participants of this event, we send a heartfelt thank you."

Monday, May 17, 2021 at 12:29 PM EDT - Update Related to COVID Guidelines

Good Morning,

Over the past week, we have seen COVID-19 regulation and guideline changes locally as well as nationally. This is a wonderful sign that our country and state are becoming safer and less at risk due to COVID-19. We have certainly all worked hard to get here! I welcome this positive trend and am confident that this is evidence that we will move forward to fully open schools in the fall.

For the remainder of this school year, an onsite protocol for Renaissance will remain intact. We believe, given the relatively short time left this school year coupled with the fact that most onsite students are not yet eligible to be fully vaccinated, this is the safest, simplest course of action.

Staff will continue to have discretion over mask breaks and may implement outdoor mask breaks per our H&S Plan at this time. While inside the building and on the campus, all students and visitors are expected to keep face coverings in place. We will also continue with our daily screening expectation for the remaining 14 days of on-campus attendance.

For students who participate in summer programs or sports programs on campus, summer mitigation plans have not been solidified. Details regarding plans for the summer will be provided in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your continued support and adherence to safety measures throughout the school year.

All the best,
Dr. Guarino Buli

Friday, May 7, 2021 at 4:11 PM EDT - Weekly Reopening Update

Good Afternoon,

The RA Board of Trustees met for a public voting meeting on May 6, 2021. At this meeting they voted 7 to 3 to maintain the current status for all students. Those who are in onsite options will remain and those that are online will remain; for the rest of the current school year.

A brief outlook for the 2021-2022 School Year was also provided. A summary of that follows.

  • Opening of school, with the first student day, as planned on August 18, 2021
  • Dates in early August will be provided for students/families to visit the school - with the understanding that MANY of our students have never seen the classrooms, spaces, etc. where they would have gone to school this year or will be attending next year.
  • New Student orientation will be planned for families/students who have not had the opportunity to tour the school.
  • We expect to be given the latitude to plan without spacing restrictions and students returning to ‘full’ classrooms
  • Emphasis on hygiene, sanitation, HVAC mitigation will be continued as currently in place at this time.
  • School specific mitigation measures which may exceed state requirements will be discussed and presented to the trustees during summer work-sessions / meetings.

Areas where we are still awaiting guidance from PDE/ DOH:

  • Details of how isolated/quarantined students will depend on periods of time, specific classes, and grade levels
  • Requirement for a new H&S Plan for the school year - this guidance will likely come out in June at the earliest
  • What reporting and contract tracing will look like or to what extent required of schools
  • Will the definition of a Close Contact change?

View the Current Phased Return Schedule for the student to return to onsite school. (on the Reopening Plan Page). As always, the following is contingent on reported cases in the areas where our students live and our ability to bring more students into the school safely. We are continually reviewing the data, guidelines, and our school’s infrastructure as it relates.

Friday, April 30, 2021 at 3:03 PM EDT- Weekly News From RA

Greetings!
Another week and another month coming to an end on a windy blustery day!

We proudly announced the US News and World Report Rankings this week on our Social Media accounts. If you have not seen the report you can see the data points and rankings here:

  • # 1 Charter High School in the Commonwealth of PA
  • #20 High School overall in the Commonwealth of PA (of 711)
  • #689 In National Rankings (of 24,000)

I want to take a moment, to officially thank our entire RA Community, past and present, for making recognition such as this possible. While the ranking data points refer to the High School program; Renaissance is truly the sum of many parts. Our foundation in being a K-12 School is paramount and the outcomes, goals, and accomplishments of our high school program are clearly the result of 21 years of hard work in all aspects of running a well-managed, fiscally responsible, high achieving school.

Thank you to our Board of Trustees who give us guidance, and holds us accountable; to our parents and students who we strive to serve well every day, to our staff who executes and carries out the plans, and to our students who do their best in whatever we require, always.

As we move toward the end of a very challenging year we will look back, with tired eyes, and perhaps wonder if we did enough? Or if we did it ‘right’? We may never know the answers to every question, but we will know that we did the best we knew to do and we did not allow ourselves to deviate from the big picture goals: We kept teaching with fidelity, we keep supporting students in creative and thoughtful ways, and we didn’t compromise on providing high-quality education. We are Renaissance and we are glad you are part of our community.

All the best,
Dr. Guarino Buli

Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at 9:42 PM EDT - Positive COVID Case

Good Evening,
We have just received notice of a positive COVID-19 case on Campus. The last time on campus with exposure to RA Staff or Students was Thursday April 15, 2021.

We will not report cases of staff or students if they are remaining in remote learning and have had no contact with our campus but we will continue to report cases of persons who were or were expected to be on campus. We will continue to track all cases for necessary quarantine and mitigation.

Close contacts are being contacted at this time, or have already been contacted. Anyone identified as a Close Contact (per the CDC definition) will be made aware directly. We will continue the process of contact tracing to determine if anyone else may be a close contact. If your student is considered a close contact, you will be made aware and they will be directed to quarantine.

Please visit the CCHD website at www.chesco.org/224/Health for more information and contact your medical provider if you have concerns.

The confirmed positive cases will be reported accordingly to the Chester County Department of Health and sanitation guidelines will be followed by our staff. If you would like more information about our COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan or Sanitation protocol those documents can be found on our website. www.rak12.org.

Onsite Families are reminded to fill out the Daily COVID Screener (in Skyward) at least one hour prior to the start of the school day, or no later than 7 am.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Be well,
Dr. Gina Guarino Buli

Friday, April 16, 2021 at 4:32 PM EDT - Reopening Plan Weekly Update

Good Afternoon,

The current COVID-19 Rates in both Chester and Montgomery County have been in the Substantial range for multiple weeks. This data requires our mitigation plan to be followed, and, as RA has determined, we will remain at 6ft Distancing. We are not able to achieve that level consistently for the next set of age groups. Therefore it is not safe to bring additional students onsite.

Our community and our trustees have consistently supported our efforts to maintain what we feel has been successful mitigation. I appreciate everyone’s flexibility and patience as we have continued to follow our plans.

Be well,
Dr. Guarino Buli

Senior Project Support

Happy Spring! As we begin to come out of the winter months, we could use some help fixing up the memorial gardens. For my senior project, I have created a plan for the space between the Upper and Lower school. Would you consider helping us?

I am looking for donations of perennial plants that we can use for the gardens. Do you have any perennials from your home garden that you would like to share with the school community? As we beautify the campus, please consider sharing a little piece of your gardens with us. Please complete the attached google form so we can plan for the planting. We are looking for the following perennials to plant during Earth week: hostas, black-eyed Susan, irises, canna lilies, sedum, astilbe(pink), lily of the Nile, snow in summer, and lavender. Collection day is on Wednesday the 21st at 3:00 pm.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Hannah Simon. I can be reached at [email protected]

Friday, April 9, 2021 at 3:02 PM EDT - RA Weekly News

Good Afternoon,

We have hit yet another milestone in concluding our last trimester SLC of the school year. From hopeful conversations, plans to make the last remaining weeks meaningful to shared relief that the end is near, I know these days are an important time for our staff and students. Thank you to all for putting in the long hours and ensuring that each conversation and plan personally address our students’ needs and success.

In the next several weeks, you will receive updates and information regarding plans for end-of-year closure as well as celebrations. We know this time of year holds a special place in our students’ minds with both the accomplishments they have reached and the opportunities to celebrate. Field trips and parties are not quite the same these days, but our staff has been planning for some equally enjoyable opportunities. We seek some safe yet fun ways to wrap up the year as we look to May and June. Information will come from your child’s teachers or principles as plans are solidified.

Thank you for a successful transition into spring and a solid finish for the remainder of the year.

All the best,
Dr. Guarino Buli

School Sponsored Events / Activities:

Senior Project Support

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted all of us in numerous ways; for the children at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) it has limited the time they can spend with family, friends, and other visitors. In these challenging times, these visitors have been the highlight of their stay at the hospital. Through my project, Connections Through Art, I am auctioning one-of-a-kind, extraordinary art pieces created by our own RA students and staff.

All proceeds from this event, taking place from April 5th to April 19th, will implement new activities for the children at CHOP and hopefully let them know that they are not alone. Even if you cannot afford to purchase one of our pieces, all donations will be greatly appreciated by me and CHOP. To either donate or bid on a piece of art, please Visit the Online Auction Site

Thanks to all the artists who contributed, and thank you in advance to those who provide generous support.

Friday, April 9, 2021 at 3:01 PM EDT - Phased Reopening Weekly Update

Good Afternoon,
The following communication is in alignment with the message sent out on Tuesday of this week.

Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 9:32 AM EDT - Covid-19 Positive Case on Campus

Good Morning,

While we have not resumed onsite learning since the recent Spring Break, we have had multiple reports of positive cases in our community. We will not report cases of staff or students if they are remaining in remote learning and have had no contact with our campus but we will continue to report cases of persons who were or were expected to be on campus. We will continue to track all cases for necessary quarantine and mitigation.

Over the past 24 hours, we received a report of three POSITIVE COVID-19 Cases regarding a person who has been on our campus. Two of the three have not been on campus since prior to the break. One of the three was on campus with exposure to RA Staff or Students yesterday, April 7, 2021.

Close contacts are being contacted at this time. Anyone identified as a Close Contact (per the CDC definition) will be made aware directly. We will continue the process of contract tracing to determine if anyone else may be a close contact. If your student is considered a close contact, you will be made aware and they will be directed to quarantine.

Please visit Chester County's Health Department Webpage for more information and contact your medical provider if you have concerns.

The confirmed positive cases will be reported accordingly to the Chester County Department of Health and sanitation guidelines will be followed by our staff. For more information about our COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan or Sanitation Protocol, see the documents posted on RA's School Reopening Plan Page.

Onsite families are reminded to fill out the Daily COVID Screener at least one hour prior to the start of the school day, or no later than 7 am.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Be well,
Dr. Gina Guarino Buli

Friday, March 26, 2021 at 1:40 PM EDT - RA Weekly News

Weekly News

Good Afternoon,
TGIF - in so many ways! This sure has been an incredibly long week for some of us. While the more pleasant weather is welcome, it sure does produce a distraction for our students who have spent a good part of the past year doing little else than going to school. I hope that your students can continue to fill their days with safe, healthy alternatives to being ‘stuck inside!’

With the excitement of a break upon us, no one can help but be a little antsy. Even if your student may not have an exciting plan, a break from the every day routines is always welcome! A little extra sleep, playtime, or a chance to change scenery is undoubtedly welcome.

I wish you and your student a safe, enjoyable break from school! A bit of rejuvenation to make the last push to the end of the year is just what we need!

COVID Updates:

As reported earlier this week, we had a person on campus with a positive COVID result. I know this can be unnerving, and I appreciate our community’s patience and cooperation in how the school responded. The team debriefs allowed us to question some practices and seek out areas to tighten our mitigation. I am confident that the processes we have in place are reasonable and continue to feel that if everyone does their part, we will continue to see a low or nonexistent level of spread in our school.

As you see, RA has been extremely conservative in our planning and bringing students onsite. We will continue to move in this manner going forward. You may be aware that some local districts are shifting to less space between students, citing the CDC Revised Guidance. The allowance of this tighter spacing is not something that RA plans to enact at this time. While it is difficult to achieve in all spaces, our plan and intention, and goal will remain at a 6ft distance between students whenever possible.

Our plans to bring more students into school are under continuous review, and the local COVID-19 Case numbers will be a factor going forward. The Phased Re-opening plan (View Schedule on School Reopening Page) reflects this. If the numbers in Chester and Montgomery County continue to rise, we will respond accordingly. We will always do our best to communicate any changes to these plans with adequate notice.

I am also happy to share that approximately 70% of our staff have opted to receive a COVID-19 Vaccination. This is a strictly voluntary, self-reported step in keeping our team, students, and communities safer. We appreciate your patience with the scheduling and management of this effort over the past few weeks.

Wishing you a healthy and safe start to spring,
Dr. Guarino Buli

Friday, March 19, 2021 at 3:02pm EDT - State Testing Update (PSSAs & Keystones)

The question of how and when to administer state assessments (PSSAs and Keystone Exams) has been on the minds of the administration and many of our teachers. As with all of the school planning for the last year, our approach has been to design plans for what we know and adjust for new information as it is received.

What we now know is that the U.S. Department of Education issued new guidance on February 22, 2021, that will allow school entities to delay the federally-required assessments until the fall.

While testing this spring according to our original plan and calendar would have been preferable, that would still require testing in the fall when more students return to campus. Therefore, PSSA and Keystone testing for Renaissance Academy students will take place in September. Fourth through ninth grade students will take the PSSA of their previous academic year. Students regardless of grade level, who completed Algebra I or Biology in the 2020-2021 school year will take the corresponding Keystone Exam. Students who are in 11th grade in the 2021-2022 school year will take the Literature Keystone Exam to fulfill that requirement from the previous academic year.

Additionally, the U.S. Department of Education approved Pennsylvania’s request to waive the federal requirements for the 2019-2020 school year. While this has no bearing on this year’s assessments, it did have an impact on students who were scheduled to take a Keystone Exam last spring. Students who passed a Keystone trigger course (Algebra I, Biology, ELA10) in the 2019-2020 school year, will automatically receive a Proficient score for the respective Keystone Exam.

With so many changes to the state assessments necessitated by the pandemic, we are even more grateful to have the resources and opportunity to administer our own local assessments (MAPs in grades 1-8 and CDTs in various Upper School math, ELA, and science classes) three times a year. These diagnostic tools provide rich, valuable, and current data that is used to make informed decisions regarding the educational program, lesson planning, and individual goal setting - all of which are important to achieving our mission of preparing your child for success.

    Anticipated PSSA Testing Dates

    • August 30 - September: 4th - 9th grade ELA
    • September 2 & 3: 4th - 9th grade Math
    • September 8 & 9: 5th and 9th grade Science and makeup tests
    • September 10, 15, & 17: make up tests

    Anticipated Keystone Exams Dates

    • September 13 & 14: Literature (11th grade)
    • September 20 & 21: Algebra I and makeup tests
    • September 22 & 23: Biology and makeup tests
    • September 27 - 29: make up tests

For more information on state testing, please visit the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Assessment and Accountability page. For questions regarding PSSAs and Keystone Exams at Renaissance Academy, please contact David Cosme at [email protected].

    News From RA

While I expressed some of my anticipation of this ‘anniversary’ last week,, today is certainly conjuring some unsettling thoughts. You do not need to look far to see the comparisons, social media ‘memories’, or everyday reminders of all that our community has been through in the past twelve months.

A year ago today, I announced our Two-week closure….. Later, a mandated closure and then extended long beyond two weeks. In a stark juxtaposition today, March 12, 2021, our first staff members are scheduled to receive the PDE/CCIU provided doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. By the end of next week, RA will have received sixty-two doses through this program, and we are grateful!

This Monday, March 15, 2021, we will have approximately 200 staff and students back on our campus. It has been a slow climb, but we are safely and proudly getting there! Earlier this week, I announced the plan that will complete our elementary school return phases. Again, progress. I am truly grateful for the team of staff, faculty and teachers who have played important roles in this planning and execution. AND I am equally appreciative of the staff, faculty and teachers who have not stepped back on campus but continue to provide a comprehensive educational culture of support to our online students.

I am well aware that there continue to be questions and concerns about ‘what comes next?’. I am working to put together a fact sheet that I hope will provide some answers and context to the growing questions.

Please note - our staff on the CCIU Vaccination Schedule will be getting their doses in the next week. We have been fortunate to get appointments with minimal disruption to the school day and instruction. However, we are sensitive to the fact that many of us may experience side effects that prevent us from being on campus or fully meet our job responsibilities. Please be aware that scheduling of the vaccines and potential side-effects may result in some teacher absences. This inconvenience is for the greater good, and we are excited to be included in this round of vaccinations.

Thank you for your continued patience, positivity, and support of our school during this past year.

    Be well,
    Dr. Guarino Buli

Thursday, March 11, 2021 at 9:42 AM EST - Phased Return Plan Update

    Good Morning,

This is the weekly update regarding our phased return of students. Rather than sending it on Friday this week, I am sending it early. I am doing this for two reasons, one, there are some changes, and I want to share this sooner than later, and two, I fear with the early dismissal, our afternoons will be busy, and I don’t want parents to miss this message. Please see below!

Please await confirmation/communication from your home district regarding transportation. Until that service is confirmed for your student, they will need to arrive by car. Transportation assignments can take up to ten days.

If your child’s schedule or teacher will be changing due to some teachers and staff’s return to campus, you will receive a notification.

    Best.

    News From RA

    Windy, March Greetings!
As we reach the first anniversary of our initial mandated closures, I am sure the sense of trepidation is a reality for many of us. It has undoubtedly been a year of unforeseen stress, worry, and massive demands. I know that everyone in our community has been faced with burdens of small and great magnitude. We will never forget what has transpired, replace the time lost or recover from the wide-spread losses of life. For many of us, change in our lives has occurred, and profound loss has been sustained. These impacts will remain. Please know that your school community remains healthy and ready to support all of our members.

I hope that as spring begins to show some signs of new life, we too can see some normalcy in the future. I also know that there is still a long road ahead as we navigate the ever-changing rules and seek a balance between regulations and safety. The recently changed/rescinded PA orders have, again, had an impact on our planning and conversations. While we will NOT be relenting on our mitigation plans, which we believe ARE keeping us safe, we are looking at the newly afforded flexibility to evaluate where changes can safely be made. These decision may affect schedules in the coming weeks, and if your child’s grade is affected we will communicate as soon as possible.

‘Teacher/Educator’ specific vaccine offerings will include Renaissance Staff, which is very good news. You likely heard about this effort announced Wednesday. You can read more about that on the Dept. of ED, COVID Vaccine Page

Over the coming weekend, the CCIU will notify me which staff who are officially eligible to receive their vaccines. We believe vaccination will begin to take place relatively quickly over the next two weeks. The school does NOT choose when our school’s allotment is offered. Staff is encouraged to take the appointments whenever they are submitted.

    All School Message:

    Good Afternoon,
Thank you for your patience, support and flexibility this week. The weather was an added obstacle to the already complex situation. As always, our number one priority is our students, staff, and community safety. I understand that weather events are unpredictable and dealing with school transportation during these times can be very confusing. I am including a reference regarding inclement weather and how our school is affected. Weather.pdf

The onsite week did end on a better note as we were able to bring another group of students to our campus. Both our high school small group and our kindergarten onsite group were able to attend for the half-day yesterday. Again it was nice to see this progression.

I also want to add, that while we are naturally happy to be bringing more students in if their families feel this is best, we will continue to maintain the online effort and level of care for our students who remain at home. It is, and has always been our goal to provide what all of our students need and deserve!

    Have a safe weekend,
    Dr. Guarino Buli

    From the School Counselors

Depression: What Should I be Looking for and When Should I Worry More?

As we prepare for the winter, please keep in mind that this season in particular may be a little more challenging for some. With the projections of continued isolation due to the pandemic, the cold weather ahead, and the shortened daylight hours, some people including children may begin to experience sadness or symptoms of depression.

Young people may have a difficult time coping as it is. Because of this it may be difficult to know whether what your child is experiencing is a normal reaction to a difficult situation or if it is something more. “Normal” could look a lot different for everyone right now. A few things you may want to pay particularly close to is if your child is expressing/showing more frustration and anger, losing motivation or not enjoying activities/things they typically enjoy and are isolating from family/friends. Trust your instincts; if something inside you tells you something doesn’t seem right, then remember it never hurts to reach out to your family doctor or other professional.

As discussed on the HelpGuide website, some signs of depression may include: sadness, irritability, frequent crying, withdrawal, loss of interest in activities, poor school performance, changes in eating and sleeping habits, feeling worthless, difficulty concentrating, thoughts of death or suicide

The counseling department has prepared this resource and other resources for you and your loved ones to look over so you can be aware of some of the warning signs of depression and when to seek help. Please check out our Counseling Department Webpages; more specifically the parent and community resource pages for more information on this and other topics.

February 2, 2021 at 11:56 AM EST - COVID Status Update

    Good Afternoon,

I hope this email finds you well. As we now have students on our campus we will be reporting confirmed cases of COVID-19 as they may pertain to our staff and students. We will not report cases of staff or students if they are remaining in remote learning and have had no contact with our campus. We will continue to track all cases for necessary quarantine and mitigation.

Today we received a report of a Positive COVID-19 Case regarding someone who has been on our campus. The last time present on campus was January 28, 2021. If anyone in our school community is a close-contact (as defined by the DOH) those persons have been contacted directly, given guidance, and directed to quarantine.

RA reports confirmed positive cases to the Chester County Department of Health and guidelines of our Health and Safety plan are followed.

If you would like more information about our COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan or Sanitation protocol that information can be found in our School Reopening Plan - Phased Opening Version Three (pdf) and COVID-19 Environmental Cleaning and Disinfection Policy (pdf)

January 29, 2021 at 4:06 PM EST - RA Weekly News

    All School Message:

    Good Afternoon,

As noted in previous weeks’ communications, we will make determinations on a routine basis going forward as we seek to bring more students onto our campus. This information will come on Friday afternoons, as that is when we are most likely to have received the most updated reports from both Chester and Montgomery County. Each Friday’s announcement will be for the 10-day projection forward. This timeline means, today, likely after 3:30 pm, I will send the update for students returning on February 8, 2021.

We hope that as we move forward, we will increase the number of students on campus each week incrementally. We plan to continue in the ORDER reflected in the original phased-return schedule while going at a slower pace than initially planned. Onsite attendance will be Monday-Thursday. Remote programs continue for ALL students on Fridays.

Also of note, once students begin attending onsite, the building will be physically CLOSED on Fridays. All staff will be required to telecommute so that our facilities team can fully implement the recommended Covid-19 sanitation protocols. Please do not attempt to come to the buildings on Fridays.

Notes as we begin to phase students back to school:

    • For those attending onsite:
      • Students in need of transportation may see a lag-time as districts rework their routes. PLEASE do not assume your child has transportation until you have received confirmation with a pick-up time and bus stop.
      • A parent /guardian must complete the COVID-19 Screener in Skyward each day* for your child. Please be sure to test this feature and begin using it daily to build that habit! *Please complete one hour before the start of the school day.

January 29, 2021 at 3:54 PM EST - Weekly Phased Return Update

    Good Afternoon,

This is the weekly Friday update regarding our phased return of students. I will aim to send this update shortly after 3:30 each week and before the end of the business day at the latest.

Each Friday, we will send notice of the anticipated group for Monday, ten days forward. Whenever possible, we will give projections beyond that if we can. Today we are publishing the next week’s anticipated plans.

You will notice that we do not plan to bring any NEW groups in on February 8, 2021. We have determined that there is a need to ensure all proper protocol is in place and that some adjustments are needed internally. With the largest group, being Kindergarten, beginning this Monday I wish to give our staff a full cycle to process these changes and demonstrate proficiency in the safety expectations.

Please await confirmation/communication from your home district regarding transportation. Until that service is confirmed for your student, they will need to arrive by car.

If your child’s schedule or teacher will be changing due to the return to campus of some teachers and staff, you will receive a notification.

We look forward to having our students back on our campus, and thank you for your support and cooperation. It is always my goal to communicate with hones, helpful information. I welcome your questions and feedback.

    Live Reopening Q & A Sessions

As a reminder, I will continue to host live Q&A sessions as I am sure we will continue to have questions and curiosities regarding our plans’ progress.

    The next is:

    • February 2nd - 5:30-6:30 PM

January 29, 2021 at 12:01 PM EST - COVID Testing Program - For Onsite Attendance!

I have some exciting news for our families that will have students attending school on campus in the coming weeks and months. If your child is continuing their learning from home virtually they will NOT be included in this program.

Our school will be partnering with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and their Project ACE-IT program to do COVID-19 rapid antigen testing. This program will allow us to be proactive in determining if someone may be positive for COVID-19. We will be able to utilize these tests when a student or staff member in the building is having symptoms or has been determined to be a Close Contact of an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19.

These tests are being performed on a purely voluntary basis. Your participation in this program is not mandatory. Also, please keep in mind that our participation in this project will have no impact on our Health and Safety Plan which we will continue to follow.

We will be utilizing the BinaxNOW Test, an antigen test that gives rapid results in 15 minutes. Tests are administered with a nasal swab (to the shallow front of the nostrils only) by a nurse trained to use this test. If you choose to allow your child to participate, a school nurse will contact you before administering a test to confirm your child's consent. More information pertaining to testing is attached with the consent form. We will also perform the tests weekly for our staff members, who are interested in participating, as an additional mitigation tool to keep our staff and students healthy and safe.

If you would like your child to participate you will be required to complete the following steps.

    1. You must complete the Student Consent Form for COVID-19 ACE-IT Program (pdf) and return it to me either by scanning it and emailing it back to [email protected] or by returning it to school with your child and having them turn it into the school nurse. We MUST be in possession of this consent form in order to perform the test. You will not have to complete the form each time your child is tested.
    2. You must create a QR code for your child that you can print and submit to the nurse's office. We cannot perform the test without this QR code.
      • Steps to create a QR code are as follows:
        • Go to PA Rapid Test Website (or enter the URS: https://register.pennrapidtest.org/ into your web browser) The app is not compatible with Internet Explorer but should work on most other web browsers.
        • Follow instructions to create a personalized QR code.
          • Take a screengrab of the QR code and store it in your device; or, cut/paste the screengrab onto a Word .doc, and print it out.
          • You may create as many personalized QR codes as you wish – each time you create a new one, you’ll enter your demographic data; but each time you use that QR code in the app at a testing event, your demographic data will pre-populate.

If you choose not to consent at this time, you are able to opt in at a later date. We are looking forward to the opportunity to participate in this program and help our school community stay healthy and safe.

    All the best,
    Grace Cavanah, CSN

    January 27, 2021 at 7:33 PM EST - COVID-19 Campus Status Update 1/27/2021

    Good Evening,

I hope this email finds you well. As we now have students on our campus we will be reporting confirmed cases of COVID-19 as they may pertain to our staff and students. We will not report cases of staff or students if they are remaining in remote learning and have had no contact with our campus. Today we received a report of a POSITIVE COVID-19 Case regarding someone who has been on our campus. The last time present on campus was January 21, 2021. The person was not in a role of interaction with students on campus. If anyone in our school community is found to be a close-contact (as defined by the DOH) those persons will be contacted directly, made aware, and directed to quarantine.

The confirmed positive case will be reported accordingly to the Chester County Department of Health and guidelines will be followed by our staff.

If you would like more information about our COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan or Sanitation protocol those documents can be found on our website.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    All School Message:

Good Afternoon - TGIF as we head into a cold and chilly weekend!

As you may have seen via Social Media or heard during our recent board meeting, we successfully had some Lower School Children back on campus this week.

I want to take a moment to share my immense gratitude and pride for the excellent job done to begin this mission and safely bring our students back to school. Many staff members were involved and jumped in to support! Additionally, thank you to our families who worked to get their students to the building, participated in our required screenings, and were patient with all new learning curves! I am hopeful for more days of students returning as we move forward.

As noted in previous weeks’ communications, we will make determinations on a routine basis going forward as we seek to bring more students onto our campus. All School Message

Good Afternoon - This has certainly been a busy week here at school. I am happy to share some updates and plans as we continue to manage and plan for the next several months.

I have a few updates and a few reminders, which I hope you will find helpful.

In response to the PDE Updated Guidelines (January 7) and the slight downward local trend we have seen in Covid-19 positivity rates, we have made some adjustments to our plans. This week contact was made with Lower School Families of the students formerly identified on the Matrix, which had been approved by our Trustees in November. This identified group of students has been given the clearance to return to school for onsite support, beginning Tuesday, January 19, 2021. This group includes a small number of students, and we are pleased to be moving forward.

This timeline means, today, likely after 3:30 pm, I will send the update for students returning on January 25th.

We hope that as we move forward, we will be able to incrementally increase the number of students on campus each week.

    For those attending onsite:

    • Students in need of transportation may see a lag-time as districts rework their routes. PLEASE do not assume your child has transportation until you have received confirmation with a pick-up time and bus stop.
    • A parent /guardian must complete the COVID-19 Screener in Skyward each day for your child. Please be sure to test this feature and begin using it daily to build that habit!
    • A cold meal will be provided for ALL students at NO cost. This offering will be a pre-packaged meal. Students may bring their food as well.

    For those remaining online:

    • You may see a change in some of your children’s teachers if that teacher returns onsite. This change will not pertain to everyone, and you will be notified of the difference if your child is impacted.
    • The daily schedule will be phased back to the full-day school schedule for ALL students (8 am-3:30 pm) as the grade levels return. You will receive an updated schedule at least ten days before the change if your student is impacted.

    General Dates and Reminders

    • January 18th - School Closed - Dr. Martin Luther King Day Observed
    • January 19th - First Group - Return to School *See message above
    • January 21st - Board of Trustee Meeting
    • January 25th - Start of National School Choice Week
    • February 8th - Family online event “Parenting During a Pandemic.”

    Presidential Inauguration:

As we are aware next week, our county will witness the Inauguration of our 46th President. Every such occurrence of a president taking office is a historical event worth noting. This year we will experience this uniquely given the Pandemic restrictions on the event and our virtual learning environment. I am confident that in some of your student's classes, this event, political process, and the ceremony itself will be the topic of discussion.

The administration is also well aware of the threats of violence regarding this day, as reported publicly by the FBI. Out of caution for our students, we will not allow live-streams of the Inauguration to be shown during classes on this day. Recordings may be viewed after the event if fitting with the curriculum and lessons. If your family wishes to have your students absent from class at some point to view the swearing-in ceremony or other components of the day, please send notice, and it will be coded as an educational excused absence.

    Elementary Choir:

Attention All New and Returning Elementary Choir members! Please see the attached choir form by clicking on the link below. The form explains how to enroll your child in the Lower School Spring Choir Program for grades 3-6. Page 1 is the information, choir rehearsal times, and how we will learn our music in the virtual meets/ choir google classroom. The second page is the choir rehearsal schedule, as we will meet every other Thursday during their independent fine art block by grade level.

Guardian/Parent Night: Parenting During the Pandemic - February 8th at 6:00 PM

We all know that this pandemic has not been easy for adults nor children. We have all experienced some type of loss with the pandemic. Those losses may look different from one another, but no matter what, they are a loss. For example, some may have had financial losses, the loss of a loved one, a loss of “normalcy,” loss of a home, loss of social interactions, etc. This pandemic has been traumatic, and with trauma comes a range of negative feelings for many.

Please join us on February 8th for a presentation hosted by Sean Halloran, Ph.D. from Barnstone Art For Kids. The presentation will focus on the pandemic, effects of trauma, and how to help your child through it. The presentation will begin at 6:00 PM and will be approximately run from 6-7:30 PM. An extra ½ hour will be added to provide an opportunity for questions and answers.

Please join us via Google Meets meet.google.com/jym-tvty-stn. This link can be found on our school calendar, as well.

If you have any questions, please contact one of the school counselors or our social worker.

    Sincerely,

    Counseling Department 2021 Campaign

In October, we launched an "Adopt a Family for the Holidays" campaign. We were able to raise over $7,000.00 for our families in need this holiday season. This money was used for meals and gifts. Renaissance greatly appreciates and mindfully stewards every dollar received. Because of support from our Renaissance community, we have made an impact on our community.

We are renewing our request for your support for our Counseling Department at the beginning of 2021. Your support will help continue the excellent work that our Counseling Department has provided to our students and community. The Counseling Department would use new funds generated to purchase new IPads that will introduce healthy coping strategies in their live offices and remote learning due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. They will also provide additional links, online strategy, and tools for healthy coping mechanisms and stress relievers that students could access.

Your support would be much appreciated and help us to support our students’ health and well being.

You can donate and give online.  Go directly to our campaign page to make an Online Donation to RA. (Donation Allocation - End of Year-Counseling Dept.)

All funds generated from this allocation will go to the counseling department and this campaign.

January 7, 2021 at 8:36 PM EST - Evening Updates

    Good Evening,

First and foremost, thank you to the families who participated in a successful Second Trimester SLCs today. Ordinarily, I would be announcing over the intercom at this time of the evening to thank you and wish you a safe ride home. The exhausted teachers would be heading out the door to prepare and rest up for the next day of meetings. In this case, separated by miles of distance and internet, I can only hope everyone is safely at home and done with their long day by now!

While I believed the last few days of emails from me would have provided enough Covid-19 updates to last us a week or so, I should have known better. By noon today, we were once again supplied with ‘updated guidance’ and recommendations from PDE and the PA Department of Health. I hope that our families have also seen or heard about this press conference. At the very least, I gained a better understanding of what the school leaders in our communities (as I have listened to this at many School Board meetings in our county!) mean when they say ‘the rules keep changing!’ The ever-changing guidance indicates that we are ALL learning along the way, and even the Public Health Officials are continually re-evaluating their recommendations.

Here are the Updated PDE Guidelines as they were delivered to schools and the public earlier today. Our Pandemic Team, Administration, and Trustees will be evaluating the new guidelines in light of our school’s ability to meet the mitigation and safety standards (which have not changed) as well as the boundaries of the Attestation Agreement to which we committed. I am sure we will begin issuing revisions and plans in light of these changes in the coming days. As always, your patience and understanding are appreciated.

I am also providing the review document prepared by Grace Cavanah, Certified School Nurse. This document is about the note in last night’s email regarding questions and confusion about how the county and state health departments derived Covid-19 rates and percentages. We hope this is helpful to understand the terms and their meanings further. Guidance on Positivity and Incidence Rates.pdf

    January 6, 2021 at 9:55 PM EST - News & Updates

This communication has relevant information for all of our families. I will often try to separate information for certain groups to keep the information flow at a minimum. Because the following announcements affect a large sector of our school, the messages are shared with everyone. I hope that transparency will help to streamline the information and avoid any misunderstandings.

    Best,
    Dr. Guarino Buli

    Staffing Updates and Changes:

For a variety of reasons, we are making necessary staffing changes. Changes in a position related to a reorganization are noted below and likely the by-product of COVID-19 safety considerations. In certain cases, elementary students will experience some teacher changes as we work to safely distance the students intended to be on campus. In other cases, we are not yet ready to announce teacher assignments as parental choices for onsite vs. remote learning are in flux.

The following staff members are new to our school and will take the following roles if they are replacing a current staff member that is noted. If they are a new staff member in a newly created position, that is noted as well. While your child may not interact with all of these staff members, you may encounter their name, and I wish to give you context. Join me in welcoming the following:

    • New Role - Support Staff, Margaret Cavanagh
    • New Role - Support Staff, Emily Keefe
    • New Role - Support Staff, Dynita Maddox
    • New Role - Support Staff, Tina Lynch
    • New Role - Temporary Second Grade Teacher /Kindergarten Support, Jessandra Blankenbiller
    • New Staff: Alyssa Fell, Replacing current Second Grade Teacher, Dawn Wales
    • New Staff: Maketa Jolly, Replacing current Special Education Supervisor, Sarah Pilacik

Pending departure with positions under recruitment - To be hired.

    • Replacing current Kindergarten Aide, Diane Yeomans - Temporary Kindergarten Teacher
    • Replacing Sean Gensert, Middle School Science

In light of the plan to bring students on site, several of our Kindergarten Aides will be assuming teaching roles. This will allow smaller groups of students to meet in our classrooms physically. All staff in teaching roles are PA certified and positioned to lead their class of students. Precise class lists and teacher assignments will be provided to those impacted once all placements have been determined. Thank you for your patience as we work to manage this very complex situation.

    Q&A Sessions Regarding Re-opening:

I will begin hosting live sessions to answer questions or provide clarity on the information previously provided. I hope to schedule sessions in the evenings and day time so that flexibility can be provided.

    • Sessions will not be for ‘announcements’ but will recap or explain already provided information.
    • Sessions will not follow a presentation format but will provide a free-form platform for questions.
    • Sessions are intended to be recorded for sharing with the community who may not be able to attend
    • From time to time, other Administrators, staff, health services may also attend sessions.

If there is continued interest, I will add sessions going forward.

    • January 13, 12:00-12:45 pm  1/13/21 Meeting
    • January 20, 5:00- 5:45 pm 1/20/21 Meeting
    • January 27, 11:30-12:15 pm 1/27/21 Meeting

    Dr. Guarino Buli

    Facebook Inquiry:

This afternoon we received a question on our Facebook Page regarding the data being reviewed in the decision-making process regarding re-opening. I want to address the existence of the question here, rather than on Facebook, as I know all of our families and community will not have access to that medium.

The question related to how the COVID-19 Community Transmission percentages are calculated. I am noting here several resources that the school and most schools are using to review and verify this information. The information is publicly available. I want to reiterate that my admin team nor I are trained statisticians or public health officials. We do not generate the reports or the data; we rely on those experts to provide that information for our guidance purposes.

We look specifically at the positivity rate numbers on a routine basis by the County Health Departments. This is the percentage rate of positive COVID-19 Tests among those who were tested. This information is provided on a 7-day rolling average. This is the same measure used by our neighboring districts and PDE to determine if a county is in the Substantial range of transmission. As Renaissance is made up of multiple counties and many districts, we choose to ALSO look at the school districts. As noted in our Health and Safety Plan, we will continue to make decisions based on both the county and district level data. We feel a responsibility given the nature of our mixed enrollment and the likelihood of cross-district contact when children attend our school.

I have also asked Mrs. Cavanagh, our School Certified Nurse, to help create some ‘easy to use’ guides/ cheat sheets on this topic, and we will share those with you as well.

For additional resources on this topic, please see below:

Thank you for your continued support in our efforts to provide a world-class education to your children. Wishing you safety and health,

    Dr. Guarino Buli

January 6, 2021 at 10:32 AM EST - Reopening Update

    Parents and Guardians:

Good morning. As indicated in our phased re-opening plan, a scheduled return to school for several grade levels begins Wednesday, January 13, 2021. This communication comes as the commitment to communicate our return status by Wednesday, January 6, 2021.

After continued consideration and a thorough review of our current data, I regret to inform you that we cannot move forward with this plan. We will continue to follow the guidance provided and remain remote-learning at this time.

The administration based this decision on PDE and the PA Secretary of Health’s consistent recommendations, which stipulate schools remain in remote learning during a period of ‘Substaional Community Transmission.’ Both Chester County and Montgomery Counties have been in the substantial range for multiple weeks, ranging in the 10+% transmission rates. We are pleased to note that these rates have been steady and have ceased to climb upward in recent weeks. We remain hopeful that we will see these numbers begin to fall with everyone’s commitment to mitigation and safety.

A review of district data shows that our greatest sending three districts are showing transmission levels much higher than the counties as a whole:

    • Springford Area School District 31.00%
    • Norristown Area School District 31.4 %
    • Phoenixville Area School District 27.43%

(Data as of Jan. 4, 2021)

Most importantly, your child remains a high priority for support and intervention. While we cannot have them on campus, we have already begun to implement changes and increased effectiveness, as you have seen since the start of the second Trimester. These efforts included schedule changes, increased support hours with teachers, and the recent hire of multiple additional staff members to provide greater oversight for our students.

Additionally, with your permission, we will expect your child to return to campus at the earliest possible date as circumstances allow. The students will follow the phased return schedule as previously shared, and the dates will be updated per the above.

Going forward, beginning on January 15, 2021, we will review data as provided and make determinations each Friday, preceding the ten days for a grade level return. This notice will allow a full 10-day window during which you can plan for your child’s return. In this scenario, we will communicate notice by Friday, January 15th, to return on January 25th, we will communicate notice by Friday, January 22nd, for the return on February 1st, and so on.

Later today, I will be sending an email that includes staffing updates and changes which may affect your student. Among these will be the announcement of several newly hired staff members who will provide support in the remote settings and manage and maintain safe numbers of students once back on campus. We are fortunate to have secured these roles and are committed to leveraging our resources to better our students’ outcomes.

I will also be sending a list of upcoming Q&A Sessions, during which I welcome your attendance. I am well aware that the information overload can be dizzying, and I hope that making myself available for a live discussion will help everyone in the effort to understand and make the best decisions for their family.

Thank you for your continued understanding, support, and partnership.

    In Health and Wellness,
    Dr. Gina Guarino Buli

    Science Fair

Update - Science Fair Deadline is extended. If your child wants to participate, please see the information below and contact Kimberly Wheeles with questions!

    Hello, Future Scientists (And Guardians)!
We were disappointed last year when the Regional Science Fair was canceled due to the pandemic. I'm SO excited to share that the Regional Science Fair is back this year, as well as the Renaissance Academy Science Fair! Things will be a little different, but the love of science will still shine through our students.

This year, All science fairs will be Virtual! The students will be creating their boards through Google Slides, will have 5 minutes interview slots with the judges, and will still have the opportunity to move onto the Chester County Regional Research Science Fair. They have also adopted this format. No more stress with creating those big science fair boards! Students will now be able to show their technology knowledge by creating through Google Slides!

Please Visit RA's Science Fair Page for information, resources, and deadlines if your child is interested.

Regionals offer a lot of scholarship opportunities, as well as a great experience to be able to see what students from all over the county are creating. What better chance to grow?! I look forward to seeing what our Amazing body of RA students makes!
