Back in March 2021, RA’s DI team participated in the PA State DI competition, which was also held virtually this year. Their project won them 1st Place and qualified them to represent the state of Pennsylvania at this international competition.

The RA DI Team members include Carter Meyer, Willow Wright, and Sophia Myers, all 7th grade students at Renaissance Academy. The team entered their DI project in the “Service Learning Challenge” category, which is designed to engage students in public service that addresses real-life community issues. This challenge involved skills including social entrepreneurship, project management, video production techniques, podcast creation, and effective storytelling.

The RA team created a video presentation in the style of a podcast that shares information about your team’s public service message. They were also required to have a commercial break that makes an outrageous claim to be presented between the two parts of their podcast. The goal of their podcast was to raise money for hospitals to help show them support in this challenging time.

RA DI team member, Willow Wright said that she was very proud of the team and that she really enjoyed working with her DI teammates. About competing during the pandemic, Willow said, “I liked the challenge of everything being virtual this year. It demonstrates the importance of communication. It was definitely a challenge, but it feels great to see our hard work pay off.”

RA DI Team staff adviser, Melissa Weidman had similar feelings about this year’s competition. “This year has been a challenge for everyone, I am so proud of the students for continuing on with DI and carving out the time to work together and create a great project! Having a front-row seat to watch them overcome obstacles and succeed has been an amazing experience!”
