Phoenixville, PA – Since opening its doors in 2000, Renaissance Academy has held a long and treasured tradition of celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month (NHHM). Each year, the month long activities ends with a school-wide Spanish Festival with Mariachi bands, crafts, food, games, piñatas, and competitions. It has been one of the highlights of the school year and a student favorite event.

This year, NHHM looked very different from past years, but the World Language Department did a great job connecting the students not only with the world around them, but also each other. Throughout the month, class lessons included NHHM discussions, daily fun facts, music, stories, trivia games, famous people, and Spanish food.

RA’s NHHM ended with a virtual Spanish Festival. Each of the Spanish teachers created a video of themselves making a recipe and/or a craft that connects with the Spanish-speaking world. They picked crafts that use common items around the house to encourage families to have fun without having to purchase anything new. They then compiled these videos, recipes, directions, and even some fun brain breaks into a document to share out with families.

One advantage of the virtual festival is that families can join in on the fun. The activities and recipes can be enjoyed as family-fun entertainment beyond the NHHM timeframe.  Check out 2nd Grader, Felicity Burns' beautiful Mexican Folk Art Sun (above)!
